Series of events for the EU-AU Summit in October 2020

Coping with the Corona crisis will significantly shape the cooperation between Germany and the EU with African partners in the coming months and years. Cooperation with Africa has been gaining in importance in the EU in the face of migration policy and increasing economic and geopolitical competition with China, Russia and other actors. At best, the Corona crisis can promote an urgently needed renewal of the partnership.

The next AU-EU summit is planned to take place in October of this year during the German EU Council Presidency. The EU Commission published key points for a „comprehensive strategy with Africa“ in March. The main topics are climate and environment, digitalisation, sustainable economic development and cooperation in the areas of governance and migration.

DIE accompanies the preparations for the summit with a series of webinars and short policy papers on the topics of digitisation, trade, the European Green Deal, investments and policy coherence. The aim is to bring together African and European decision-makers, academics and representatives of the private sector and civil society in order to identify convergences of interest, to develop common solutions and opportunities for cooperation. The webinars and policy papers are developed together with the African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET), the European Center for Development Policy and Management (ECDPM) and the European Think Tanks Group (ETTG). The first webinar in this series is titled “Towards a digital partnership between the EU and the AU” and will take place on May 28th.
