On 23 March 2021, Dr. Ines Dombrowsky, Head of the Programme „Environmental Governance and Transformation to Sustainability“ of the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and researchers of DIE discussed opportunities for collaboration with York University and the Global Centre on Adaptation under the recently launched Synergies of Planetary Health Research Initiative and Lab.
During this workshop-style meeting, Prof. Idil Boran, the Research Initiative’s Founder and Principal Investigator (York University and DIE Associate Researcher), and Dr. Sander Chan, Co-Principal Investigator of the Research Initiative (GCA and DIE Associate Researcher), provided a guided tour of the Research Initiative and Lab. The guided tour highlighted the research initiative’s vision, methodological approach, outreach and knowledge exchange strategies, as well as opportunities for institutional collaboration.
The Synergies of Planetary Health Research Initiative, housed by the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research (York University, Canada), is an international and transdisciplinary collaborative initiative for research and global outreach for strengthening governance linkages between climate, biodiversity, and health, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Lab seeks to:
- Develop critical perspectives and strengthen local, non-state, and subnational actor engagement at multiple levels of governance on four tracks: (1) nature-based solutions and sustainable development synergies; (2) adaptation to slow onset health impacts of climate change; (3) effective, equitable, and integrated: new critical problem-solving methodologies to achieve health, environmental, and social goals; (4) new integrative methodologies and training.
- Provide expert support through global engagement and knowledge mobilization at the United Nations Framework Convention to Combat Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the SDGs.
- Support early-career researchers and create opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students to engage in research and outreach.
