Publication on the EU-Turkey relations

Cover EU-Turkey Relations BookRelations between the European Union and Turkey have become more relevant, more complex, but also tenser in recent years. In their recent open access publication „EU-Turkey Relations – Theories, Institution, and Policies“ (2021, Palgrave Macmillan), Wulf Reiners working at the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and Ebru Turhan (Turkish-German University) have brought together twenty authors for a comprehensive analysis of the critical developments.

With a focus on the last decade, the book offers a comprehensive approach to understanding the multi-layered relations through three entry points (1) theories and concepts, (2) institutions, and (3) policies. Part 1 brings together complementary and competing analytical approaches to the study of EU-Turkey relations, ranging from traditional theories of international and European relations to alternatives approaches like differentiated integration. Part 2 examines the key actors in the EU institutional architecture for the relationship with Turkey by studying the roles and perspectives of the European Council, the European Commission and the European Parliament. Part 3 offers analyses of the key policy areas of EU-Turkey relations: enlargement policy, trade and macroeconomic policies, foreign and security policy, migration and asylum policies, and energy policy. In part 4, the volume concludes with a systematic overview of the conditions for cooperation that shape the relationship between the two sides. The authors also identify pathways to strengthening cooperation and set out a future research agenda.

The book was developed within the framework of the Jean Monnet project „INSITER – Inside the Turkey-EU Relations“ and with the support from the Managing Global Governance (MGG) programme. Its systematic structure and combination of renowned experts from both the EU and Turkey make the book valuable to students, scholars and policy makers of EU-Turkey relations, European integration and Turkish foreign policy alike.
