Earth System Governance Conference

Between 7 and 10 September, DIE was involved in the Earth System Governance (ESG) Conference with several biodiversity-related contributions.

As co-host of the conference, the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) organised a science-policy dialogue on the current negotiations for a new strategic plan of the Convention on Biological Diversity (post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework). It was chaired by Steffen Bauer and moderated by Ina Lehmann. Short presentations, which became the basis for a lively discussion, were given by Christine von Weizsäcker, President of the environmental organisation ECOROPA, Balakrishna Pisupati, Head of UN Biodiversity, and Elisa Morgera, Professor of International Environmental Law at Strathclyde University, Glasgow. Ina Lehmann and Jean Carlo Rodríguez from DIE were also involved in the establishment of an ESG Task Force on the ‘Governance of Nature and Biodiversity.’ Finally, Ina Lehmann presented a paper on the governance of agricultural biodiversity.
