Leveraging the potential of G20 and G7 cooperation

At a conference, experts discussed the importance of Club Governance formats for sustainable development and climate protection.

Club Governance formats such as the G20 and G7 have an important role to play in raising the level of ambition to effectively combat climate change and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. This was the key message that came out of a virtual expert conference organised on 13 and 14 September 2021 by the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) in cooperation with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Indonesia, and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network Europe.

The Carbis Bay G7 summit in June 2021 resulted in a number of substantial outcomes, in particular assessed against the background of deep disagreements on issues such as climate protection in the past four years. Participants, however, agreed that more ambitious commitments by G20 leaders’ summit in Rome at the end of October are needed to bring the COP26 to a successful conclusion. The expert conference also discussed Germany’s presidency of the G7 and Indonesia’s G20 presidency in 2022. The experts concluded that both processes need to be well aligned and coordinated to minimise geo-political frictions. Expert dialogues are a crucial element to support policy makers to set agendas that have the potential to effectively tackle global challenges, reflect on recent empirical evidence on suitable policy tools and send messages of urgency.
